A precedent in ROLEX traditions

For the first time in its history one of the most conservative Swiss watch brands designed a special Deepsea model in honour of a person. James Cameron is the lucky one deserving this privilege.

It is quite common that new brand ambassadors are treated in an exclusive way by having a “limited edition” item, especially made for them. This is not the case with ROLEX. No brand ambassador has ever been honoured by the Swiss brand in such a way. Until now.

The relationship between James Cameron and ROLEX started a few years ago within a project they were working on. Along with other companies, they made a submersible vessel, called Deepsea Challenger, aimed to reach the deepest known point on the Earth – Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, Pacific Ocean. James Cameron himself piloted the vessel and the mission was a great success. He is the first man who reached alone the deepest point of near 11 000 meters under the water. Besides the experience of visiting a “whole new world” Cameron got materials for a new 3D movie to come out quite soon with the title “Deepsea Challenge”.

During the mission in 2012 Cameron was wearing a ROLEX Deepsea model on his wrist. A special experimental Rolex Deepsea Challenge watch was installed outside of the vessel on an hydraulic manipulator arm. The model was designed to withstand the crushing pressure of about 12 tones on the crystal. ROLEX Deepsea Challenge emerged completely unharmed after this 11-kilometers trip and kept the time perfectly throughout nearly seven hours beneath the water.

To commemorate James Cameron’s success ROLEX launched its new Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea D-BLUE DIAL. “From brilliant blue to bottomless black, its two-colour gradient dial celebrates one man’s journey to the deepest place on Earth.”
